Monumental Catrinas in Atlixco

In its fourth edition, the Valley of Catrinas in Atlixco has established itself as one of the most anticipated events of the Day of the Dead season. This impressive show, held in the charming Magic Town of Atlixco, Puebla, highlights the talent and dedication of its artisans, who year after year surprise local and international visitors with their creativity. This event has not only gained fame in Mexico, but its resonance has reached North America and Europe, making it a cultural phenomenon of great impact.

This year, more than 20 monumental catrinas, with heights reaching up to 8 meters, will adorn different points of the Atlixco Valley from October 11 to November 10. These figures are made with the traditional technique of cartonería, which gives them a unique artisanal character.

The theme of this edition, “Historical Characters of Our Country”, seeks to pay tribute to figures that have marked the Mexican identity, transmitting their legacy through these majestic works of art. Each catrina is carefully decorated and represents key historical figures in the history of Mexico, including La Adelita, Pancho Villa, and even the emblematic xoloitzcuintle dog, a figure deeply rooted in pre-hispanic mythology and Mexican traditions.

To top it off, the Valley of Catrinas will cross borders this year, as some of these monumental catrinas will be exhibited at the Mexico City International Airport, Los Angeles and Rome, which reflects the transcendence of this event and its potential to bring Mexican culture to corners of the world.

However, there is no better way to live this experience than in its birthplace. We invite you to enjoy it surrounded by the vibrant orange of the cempasúchil fields, blooming in full season.

This event is one more sample of Mexico’s vast and colorful cultural mosaic. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire these impressive works of art and enjoy one of the country’s most emblematic traditions. Plan your trip with us and don’t forget to include Atlixco in your next visit to Mexico!
