La Guelaguetza, Oaxaca

The word «Guelaguetza» means offering, or present, in the Zapotec language. That is why in this maximum celebration of the state of Oaxaca, in Mexico, the generous act of giving is remembered, celebrating the fact that this will be reciprocated.

In Mexcellence Travel we want to share a little more of this exciting tradition with this article.

We could say that the Guelaguetza is the inevitable synergy between the Zapotec tradition and the efforts of the evangelizers, who instilled Catholic rites in the area.

In fact, in the colonial era, there was the Corpus party of the Church of Carmen Alto, a church built by the Carmelite order, built on a hill that the Zapotecs called Bella Vista. This party was celebrated on July 16, and was repeated eight days later.

The natives of the area added their own traditions, since they already celebrated a holiday dedicated to Centéotl, god of corn or corn, to which they offered delicious offerings with great honors.

Today, the men and women of the eight regions of the state of Oaxaca, make this great party in the state capital, offering products to the land and its hosts. And not only has it fascinated the locals, but also a large influx of foreigners who come to Oaxaca every year, to catch the holiday mood.

Also, in Oaxaca it is well known that without music there is no party, so great regional dance shows – from the Central Valleys, the Cañada, the Papaloapan, the Mixteca, La Costa, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Sierras Norte and Sierra Sur- are carried out all day.

Also, other folkloric shows have been added, such as the parade of delegations, organized in a similar way to a calendar.

This is the next July 20 and 27 where thousands of people will fill the streets of Oaxaca and will sit in the Guelaguetza auditorium to appreciate this celebration of unique traditions, a party and an era where all your senses will be dazzled.

Come and get this holiday and the magic of the state of Oaxaca!
