Chichen Itza is a legendary mayan city due to its importance as a cultural and political centre of the old civilizatiob. It was claimed as world heritage by UNESCO in 1988 and is also ones of the modern world’s wonders since 2007. Placed at Yucatan state, 128km far from Merida, at the south of Mexico. It was founded between 325 and 550 a.C. it was supposed to be the most important cultural and economic centre, it was the capital of a wide territory, becoming the most powerful city of the Yucatan Peninsula at the beginning of the 12th century, the territory of this culture reached 25 km2, only the religious, administrative and cultural center covered about 6km2. The palace-type buildings were inhabited by the elite and about 10 thousand people lived in palapas made with palm roofs.
Among the attractions that we can observe today in the archaeological zone are:
The pyramid of Kukulkan. Also known as Kukulkan Castle, it is the main building of the City. Its great structure reveals the great knowledge of the Maya regarding mathematics, acoustics, astronomy and geometry. Representing the Mayan calendar with perfect symmetry. At the top of this majestic 25-meter building is the Kukulkan Temple.
Ball game. It is the best preserved “court” and the largest in Mesoamerica. In this place rituals of great importance were made for the Mayan culture, we can still observe the two rings where the ball passed.
Sacred Cenote. It is a circular hole in the earth of approximately 15 meters deep and 60 in diameter. It is believed that human sacrifices and various rituals were carried out to ask favors from the gods. The proof of this is that jewels and bones of adults and children have been found in it.
Temple of the warriors. This temple shelters the Chac Mool (sculpture of the rain god), holds a bowl, which is thought to be used in rituals. The temple is surrounded by a large group of columns, in it we can find the upper temple.
Every year during the spring equinox, on March 21, a large number of people come to the area to watch the descent of the snake in the pyramid of Kukulkan, which can be observed thanks to the effects of light on the Temple Staircase
